Physicians consider laser one of the best methods of tattoo removal. The Q-switched Nd:YAG is the most frequently used laser today for the removal of unwanted tattoos. This new generation of tattoo removal laser technology has greatly reduced the risk of possible scarring. Pulses of light emitted by the laser pass harmlessly through the top layer of skin to be selectively absorbed by the tattoo pigment, without damaging the surrounding skin. The lasers energy causes the tattoo pigment to break down into small particles that are removed by the body’s immune system.
Following the treatment, antibacterial ointment and a dressing will be applied to the area, which should be kept clean with continued application of antibacterial ointment as directed. The treated area will be red or may form a scab, which should be handled gently. Your skin may feel slightly tender or sunburned for a few days and the treated area may remain red for a few weeks. After healing, the site will gradually and continually fade. The average patient will require 4-8 treatments spaced 12 weeks apart.
